The Cathedral Girls Chorus

Founded in autumn 2000 by Cathedral music director, Mark Thomas, the Cathedral Girls Chorus quickly became the Cathedral’s second principal choir, and has gained a huge following in and out of Charleston. Approximately 25 teenagers plus alumni make up this nationally renowned girls choir.

The Girls Chorus has released the CD recording, Mary At The Cross, featuring Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with strings and chamber organ, as well as music for treble voices and strings by Mark Thomas. They also can be heard on Oratio with the Cathedral Choir.

The Chorus’ repertoire (for unison to four part treble voices) spans 10 centuries of sacred and liturgical music, including chant, historical classical music, new music, multicultural music and world premieres.

In addition to maintaining a regular year-round singing schedule at the Cathedral’s Sunday 5:15pm Mass, the Chorus sings some 30 additional liturgies, concerts and special events each year. They perform annually for both Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival and for their highly acclaimed Lenten Meditations series at the Cathedral.

The Girls Chorus has performed for several audiences in Rome, most notably at Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore before a crowd of several thousand, December 30, 2005. They also participated in the first New Year’s Day Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter’s Basilica. They were chosen as a US representative choir at the 2005-06 International Congress of Pueri Cantores at the Vatican, and again for the 2007 International Congress in Krakow, Poland. In July 2007, they performed in Budapest, Hungary at Saint Stephen Cathedral. The Chorus will sing with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra on December 20, 2008 at the Gaillard Auditorium.

The Cathedral Girls Chorus sings for the Sunday 5:15pm Mass, year-round, on the first and third Sundays of each month (alternating Sundays with the Women’s and Men’s Scholas). Please refer to the specific Schedule.
